Nilesh Samani is Professor of Cardiology at the University of Leicester. He was amongst the first to describe the widespread extra-renal expression of the renin gene and he showed that this is altered in a tissue-specific manor in hypertension and heart failure. He has used DNA fingerprinting techniques for mapping loci predisposing to hypertension in genetic models of essential hypertension and in humans with hypertension. He has recently shown a potentially important involvement of premature telomere shortening in atherosclerosis.
