Rury Holman is Professor of Diabetic Medicine at the University of Oxford. His work has transformed the clinical management of type 2 diabetes. Rury Holman co-directed the pivotal United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study – known as UKPDS - and developed the Oxford-based Diabetes Trials Unit into the largest academic organization in the world that works specifically on outcomes in diabetes. His work, through the UKPDS study, overturned the concern that oral sulphonylurea agents might increase cardiovascular risk, and demonstrated that both microvascular and macrovascular complications could be reduced by improved control of blood glucose and established the importance of blood pressure control in improving these outcomes.
