Peter Fonagy is Freud Memorial Professor of Psychoanalysis at UCL, one of the world's most cited clinical psychologists and the most cited living psychoanalyst. His work initiated the process of systematic reviewing of psychotherapy that has helped establish psychological therapies as a credible alternative to physical treatments for mental health problems. With colleagues he founded the British Psychological Society's Centre for Outcomes Research and Effectiveness, which has been responsible for 23 of the last 25 NICE mental health guidelines. He has also developed and demonstrated the effectiveness of a novel dynamic psychotherapy, Mentalization Based Treatment, for self-harming suicidal patients with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.
