Paul Klenerman is an outstanding clinician scientist who has made consistent and major contributions to viral immunology. His work on hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been truly world leading. He was the first to define the nature of the cellular immune responses to the virus and the features associated with immune protection. He has gone on to translate this work into a vaccine for HCV, the first such vaccine to induce potent anti-HCV immunity in humans and a major breakthrough in attempts to develop successful vaccination for this disease. In addition to his work on HCV Paul has broad expertise in viral immunology. His work has elucidated the unique nature of the hepatic immune system and how it can become dysregulated in chronic inflammatory disease.
