Nick Craddock is a psychiatric geneticist at Cardiff University and one of the world’s leading researchers into bipolar disorder (BD). He led the BD component of the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (WTCCC) and was senior author of the recent collaborative analysis that implicated 2 genes involved in ion channel function in the pathogenesis of the illness. He led the first efforts to explore the overlap of specific risk genes in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. His work has laid great emphasis on relating genetic findings to psychopathology and nosology and he has developed a scale to facilitate study of relationship between mood and psychosis which is now being used widely
