Neil Marlow, Professor of Neonatal Medicine, University of Nottingham, is a neuroscientist and expert in child development who has made unparalleled contributions to our knowledge of the effects of preterm birth on the brain. His major contributions have come through large-scale studies of outcomes, in particular the unique EPICure study, which examined the neurodevelopmental outcome of all infants born at the margins of viability in the UK for a year. This research provides the bedrock of our understanding of the risks of preterm birth and its treatment, and has led to two major papers, both seminal contributions to knowledge and amongst the most widely cited in pediatrics. This is an example of sustained focused research at the highest level, with a time scale measured in decades. He is much in demand as a collaborator in other studies because he is known to be the expert of choice in this area and he has been an important part of a number of major studies which have had significant impact on medicine. His contribution is outstanding and world class.
