Professor Martin Wilkins is Head of the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London and is recognised internationally both for his contributions to the field of pulmonary hypertension and for his leadership in experimental medicine. His work has used genetics and pharmacological probes to demonstrate a pivotal role of cyclic GMP in pulmonary vascular homeostasis. These observations played a leading role in developing two treatments for pulmonary vascular disease, both now licensed for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. His recent work on pulmonary vascular remodelling has used molecular imaging and circulating biomarkers to improve patient stratification in this complex disease.
