Ian Greer is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Glasgow and honorary consultant at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He has international recognition for his work on heritable and acquired thrombophilia in pregnancy. He published seminal papers on the risk of venous thrombosis in women with thrombophilia in pregnancy and this has work has major clinical implications. Professor Ian Greer has also made major contributions to research into pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia. He demonstrated inflammatory and cellular mechanisms involved in endothelial dysfunction of pre-eclampsia, particularly the role of the neutrophil, and more recently has been a major contributor to a novel area of research focused on the long-term cardiovascular outcomes in women with pre-eclampsia. This work has identified that 20 years after the pregnancy women who have had pre-eclampsia have features of insulin resistance and microvascular dysfunction. This combination of mechanistic research and epidemiology is of course key to improvement of clinical practice and public health medicine. He has delivered several prestigious lectureships including the William Blair Bell Memorial Lectureship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
