Bart Vanhaesebroeck is Professor of Cell Signalling at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He has made key discoveries about the functions of the PI 3-Kinase (PI3K) enzymes in cancer, inflammation and immunity. His research programme combines fundamental studies of the biochemistry and cell biology of the PI3K system with efforts to translate these findings into diagnostic and therapeutic applications. His seminal work includes the isolation of the genes of several isoforms of PI3K, and the delineation of their biological roles in normal physiology and disease. A key success was the identification of the p110delta isoform of PI3K as a new target in immunity, inflammation and cancer.
