Andrew Prentice is distinguished for his work on the effects of diet on human health and disease and is an acknowledged world leader in global health research. He has made major contributions in two main fields: the regulation of human energy balance and obesity; and the effects of malnutrition on maternal and child health in poor populations. His seminal work demonstrates that the causation of obesity is explained by defects in the regulation of energy intake rather than energy expenditure. This has transformed the research agenda and has been universally confirmed by subsequent research. His attention now focuses on the consequences of macro- and micro-nutrient deficiencies on the health and development of mothers and their babies in developing countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa.
