Martin Birchall is Professor of Laryngology at the UCL Ear Institute and the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital. Previously he held Chairs in Head and Neck Surgery at Liverpool and then Bristol. A key achievement was leading the international team which performed the World’s first fully-tissue engineered, stem-cell based, airway transplant. Martin is also principal investigator of the EASTER trial comparing laser and radiotherapy treatment, and has generated national standards for head/neck cancer audit. He also leads the project to establish a national cohort of head and neck cancer patients for clinical, genetic and epidemiological research.
