Laurence Hurst is Professor of Evolutionary Genetics at the University of Bath and is a leading authority on the evolution of genetic systems. He has answered fundamental questions, including how the genetic code evolved, how the genome is organized, why some gene families are larger than others and what determines the rate of protein evolution. This work, and his demonstration that genes are clustered in the human genome, directly impacts on strategies for gene therapy. He was also one of the first EMBO members elected in this area and is also a founding director of The Genetics and Evolution in Schools project.
