Kevin Shakesheff, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation at the Open University, has made an outstanding contribution to the medical sciences through his research, entrepreneurship and national-level leadership of regenerative medicine and animal replacement technologies. Within the field of pharmacy research, he is a pioneer in the creation of new classes of cell-interactive materials and their application in regenerative medicine and animal replacement. Professor Shakesheff has helped the UK become a world leader in regenerative medicine and animal replacement. He has helped launch an ambitious strategic plan and championed the industry-facing CRACK-IT programme that creates challenges such as the creation of a virtual dog to partially replace in vivo experiments in the future.
