John Fisher is Director of the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Leeds. He is distinguished in the field of implant development. His work on wear in artificial joints was important in our understanding of osteolysis and loosening and has led to the redesign of implants that last for longer under the greater stresses associated with use in younger patients. His work on heart valve replacements led to a highly successful bioprosthetic heart valve and his recent work on new biological scaffolds has led to a successful spin out company.
