John Terry, Interdisciplinary Professorial Fellow at the University of Birmingham, is an outstanding interdisciplinary scientist, whose contributions span both academia and industry. He’s most well-known for his impactful research in epilepsy and the mammalian hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis, through his use of physiologically inspired mathematical models. Examples include revealing a periphery generator of stress-responsive hormone rhythms, and uncovering mechanisms from which seizures emerge in large-scale brain networks, guiding diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. He has established internationally recognised research centres at both the University of Exeter and the University of Birmingham, creating diverse teams built on a foundation of support for early career researchers, and is a first-generation scientist with a passion for science communication and involving the public in research.
