Professor of Sleep and Physiology at the University of Surrey, Derk-Jan Dijk works in the area of human sleep-wake regulation and circadian rhythms. His seminal work has elucidated the interaction between circadian rhythmicity and sleep homeostasis in the regulation of sleep duration, sleep structure and characteristics of the electroencephalogram as quantified by spectral analysis. This research, now included in most textbooks on sleep and sleep medicine, forms the basis for the understanding of how the negative consequences of conditions such as shift work, jet lag, mistimed light exposure and ageing relate to the basic regulation of the human sleep-wake cycle.
