Peter Piot is Director and Professor of Global Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a leading figure in global health today. He has made major advances in our understanding of the HIV epidemic in Africa, he was the founding Executive Director of UNAIDS for more than 10 years and the co-discoverer of the Ebola virus. In 1984 he lead a group of authors who documented the emergence of HIV/AIDS in Kinshasa and made the case that central Africa represented a new epidemiological setting of widespread heterosexual transmission. His research on the relationship between TB and HIV in Africa and on appropriate treatment was highly influential.
