Anne Dell is Professor of Carbohydrate Biochemistry at Imperial College London. She is distinguished for her major contributions to carbohydrate biochemistry and chemistry. She has pioneered the development of combined microchemical and mass spectrometric procedures for the identification of novel carbohydrate structures of biological and medical importance. She has applied these procedures in her research on bacterial, plant and mammalian polysaccharides, glycolipids and glycoproteins, and has thus made a significant contribution to current understanding of the functions of glycopolymers, playing a leading role in several international consortia. Landmarks of Anne Dell’s research have included determination of structures of parasite glycans, characterisation of endometrial and seminal fluid glycodelins and unravelling of the complex lactosaminoglycan structures on human erythroid and myeloid cells. In addition Professor Dell has made important contributions to the structural glycobiology of mammalian sperm-egg recognition and pathogen-host interactions.
