Paul Griffiths is Professor of Radiology at the University of Sheffield, and has an international reputation in neuroradiology. His main area of interest is applying magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the immature brain. He established the first research study in Britain using in-utero MR to diagnose central nervous system malformations in 1999. This led a year later to the initiation of the first systematic study using post-mortem MR imaging of the foetus and neonate. and the Unit has now performed over 500 such examinations. He continues to develop in-utero MR imaging, particularly for foetal problems such as intrauterine growth retardation. This has required the application of MR protocols to obtain ‘physiological’ information in-utero, using a range of techniques including diffusion weighted imaging, proton spectroscopy and MR angiography. He has built up The Academic Radiology Unit in Sheffield from a rather low base on appointment and it now consists of 30 people including seven senior academic radiologists and physicists.
