Professor Tom Strachan is Scientific Director at the Institute of Human Genetics at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He is a distinguished geneticist who has made contributions in many areas of the subject. He was the first to clone genes for several inherited diseases including a form of limb girdle, muscular dystrophy,Waardenburg’s syndrome and Darier Disease. Recently he has cloned a gene in the mouse, appropriately named invirsin, which is a major determinant of the left, right axis.
