Council election 2024 - results

The Academy of Medical Sciences is pleased to announce that the following Fellows have been elected to the Academy Council. Each will serve a three-year term of office.

Professor Deborah Ashby OBE FMedSci 

  • Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London
  • Non-Clinical, elected to the Academy in 2012 

Professor Sir John Iredale FRSE FMedSci 

  • Professor of Experimental Medicine, University of Bristol and Chair, Lister Institute for Preventative Medicine
  • Previously served on Council, 2011-14
  • Clinical, elected to the Academy in 2003 

Professor Peter Openshaw CBE FMedSci 

  • Professor of Experimental Medicine and Proconsul, Imperial College London and Visiting Professor, University of Bristol
  • Clinical, elected to the Academy in 1999 

Professor Catherine Williamson FMedSci 

  • Professor of Women’s Health, Imperial College London
  • Clinical, elected to the Academy in 2018 

The Academy received 12 nominations for four places on Council this year. The election was conducted as an online ballot by Civica Election Services, with voting taking place between 2 October and 7 November using the single transferrable vote system. 

Voter turnout this year was 42%, with a total of 611 Fellows participating in the election - the highest election turnout rate to date. 

In addition to the four new members, Professor Franklin Aigbirhio FMedSci and Dr Felicity Gabbay FMedSci have been re-appointed as co-opted members of Council for a further year of service.  

In the new year, the Academy’s Nominations Committee will explore the co-option of additional Council members to increase the breadth of representation in terms of geography, speciality and sector expertise.   

The Academy thanks the retiring members of Council for their service to the organisation over the last three years:

  • Professor Sadaf Farooqi FMedSci, Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow and Professor of Metabolism and Medicine, University of Cambridge 
  • Professor Sir Andrew Pollard FMedSci, Professor of Paediatric Infection and Immunity and Honorary Consultant Paediatrician, University of Oxford 
  • Professor Paula Williamson FMedSci, Professor of Medical Statistics, University of Liverpool
