Professor Timothy Leighton FRS FREng FMedSci ScD DSc

Timothy Leighton, Professor of Ultrasonics and Underwater Acoustics at the University of Southampton, is an outstanding academic whose leadership in acoustical physics of bubbles has led to the development of new medical devices and procedures. His deep understanding of ultrasound and the collapse of bubbles led directly to novel tools for monitoring kidney stone dispersal during lithotripsy and a needle free injection system. Professor Leighton’s inventions for transmitting ultrasound down streams of water have produced patented cleaning devices and most recently, a wound healing device, all of which operate with just cold water and ultrasonics, without soap, chemicals or heating.
