Tim Bishop is Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine in the University of Leeds, has played a leading role in genetic studies, particularly studies to map cancer susceptibility genes, and has been particularly instrumental in establishing international collaborations to this end. Professor Bishop was one of the driving forces behind the Breast Cancer Linkage Consortium, which played a major role in the mapping of the breast cancer genes BRCA1 and BRCA2. Subsequently, his Unit in Leeds was involved in the identification and characterisation of high risk genes for colorectal cancer. More recently, he has been responsible for analysis within the Melanoma Genetics Consortium and International Testis Cancer Linkage Consortium, which are focused on the identification of genes for these important diseases. In addition to his genetics research, he has played a major role in the application of genetics to clinical practice as well as playing an important wider role, through teaching and training, in the fostering of genetic epidemiology as a discipline in the U.K. We welcome him to our Academy.
