Steve Yeaman is Professor of Molecular Enzymology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. With Professor Maggie Bassendine he was first to identify the nature of the antigen against which the highly disease specific autoantibody, the antimitochondrial antibody, is directed in primary biliary cirrhosis. This is the pyruvate dehydrogenase multienzyme complex and his group was subsequently the first to describe the 3-D structure of the E2p component of this complex – the major PBC autoantigen. A second major contribution has been his demonstration that hormone sensitive lipase is a multifunctional lipid metabolising enzyme in a variety of tissues.
