Stefan Neubauer is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford. His move to the UK in 1999 launched an innovative research programme which has already has a major impact. By harnessing the increasingly powerful tools of magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging he has shown the central importance of altered energetics in heart failure. Hypotheses derived from clinical observations over ten years ago have now been validated by elegant experiments in genetically manipulated mouse models, taking this work to the point that new therapeutic interventions are being explored in man. Early evidence of success in translation is shown in recent clinical papers documenting key abnormalities in chronically ischaemic myocardium which in turn predict whether function will recover after coronary artery bypass surgery. His international reputation is firmly established, not least by 21 papers in Circulation. He has had spectacular success with Young Investigator Awards for his research fellows and he has himself delivered the Paul Dudley White International Lecture at the 2005 American Heart Association. Professor Neubauer has shown remarkable leadership skills and a valuable focus on translational research
