Professor Shitij Kapur FMedSci

Shitij Kapur is Vice Dean of the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. He has used positron emission tomography to investigate the functional anatomy of memory. He has also shown that dopamine D2 blockade is a key mechanism of newer antipsychotics besides their actions on serotonin and other receptors. His work using rodents has demonstrated that the effective dosage range at which antipsychotics exert their behavioural effects is lower than was conventionally accepted. Importantly, his research has had a marked influence on clinical practice that has benefited patients with psychoses through reducing the incidence of over sedation and extra pyramidal effects.
