Professor Richard Hayes FMedSci

Richard Hayes is Professor of Epidemiology and International Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has made important contributions to the statistical theory of trial design, particularly cluster randomisation, but is especially recognized for studies of preventive interventions against HIV including Groundbreaking studies in Mwanza, Tanzania showing that improving sexually transmitted disease treatment services led to a 40% reduction in HIV infection in the general population. He is closely involved in evaluating vaginal microbicides and testing new methods to control tuberculosis in HIV-endemic areas.
