Professor Richard Olver FMedSci
Emeritus Professor of Child Health

Elected Fellow 2001
Professor Richard Olver is James Mackenzie Professor of Child Health at the University of Dundee. The focus of his research career has been to understand the regulation of ion and water transport across lung epithelia. This is important for the understanding of the mechanisms underlying respiratory diseases as diverse as lung hypoplasia, respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary oedema and cystic fibrosis. Among several important contributions Richard Olver discovered that active chloride transport drives fluid secretion across the foetal lung epithelia in the lung lumen, acting as a liquid template to regulate lung growth.
