Paul Martin is Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Bristol. His research is characterised by his innovative use of multiple technologies in model organisms to investigate the molecular and cellular basis of tissue repair and the associated wound inflammatory response. His discovery that mammalian embryos heal wounds without subsequent scarring and his demonstration that this correlates with the lack of a robust inflammatory response until late foetal stages, led directly to his iconoclastic finding that adult skin wounds can heal effectively without an inflammatory response and that repair is then fibrosis free. This work led to the identification of several candidate “fibrosis” genes.
