Elected Fellow 2019
Nick Wareham is Director of the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge. He has made important discoveries concerning the genetic, developmental and behavioural determinants of type 2 diabetes. He has provided extensive insight into the determinants of dietary intake and physical activity behaviours, and their association with chronic disease outcomes. His work has provided reliable estimates of the potential effectiveness of population-wide interventions such as increasing physical activity and reducing the consumption of fast food and sugar-sweetened beverages. His contributions have directly informed public health strategies and have enormous potential to ameliorate the rising tide of type 2 diabetes across the globe.
