Melita Gordon, Professor in Global Health at the University of Edinburgh, has made outstanding contributions in typhoidal and non-typhoidal invasive Salmonella disease, estimated globally to cause 24M illnesses and 220,000 deaths annually.
Over 25 years working in Malawi, she led high-quality research to generate original landmark scientific knowledge, and influence global policy.
Her landmark African phase 2,3 and 4 clinical trials of typhoid conjugate and iNTS vaccines, provided evidence to underpin vaccine introductions across Africa and Asia. The Malawi national introduction of typhoid conjugate vaccine targeted <9M children to prevent illnesses and deaths.
She has a strong commitment to training the next generation of researchers in Africa, building and mentoring a vibrant research group of young Malawian and British scientists.
