Matthias Merkenschlager is a Career Scientist at the MRC’s Clinical Sciences Centre at Imperial College. He is a molecular immunologist who has tackled the problem of how cells make and remember lineage decisions which is central to the understanding of development, cancer and cellular reprogramming. A hallmark of his work has been to combine in vitro cellular differentiation models with in vivo genetic engineering. Recent work has included the mechanistic basis of Cornelia de Lange and Roberts syndrome, pharmacological manipulation of cell fate choice in the immune system, and unravelling the molecular circuitry of lymphocyte development.
