Matthew Costa, Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford, is an outstanding clinician scientist. As National Chair of the Injuries and Emergencies Specialty Group, he led the expansion of the injuries and emergencies portfolio within the United Kingdom. His leadership has ensured that a high proportion of eligible patients are recruited into clinical trials and has also ensured that every ambulance trust in England is now involved in recruiting into national trials. He is an outstanding mentor and trainer of young academic surgeons and much of his research has resulted in changes to both NHS patient pathways and NICE Clinical Guidelines.
