Matthew Pickering, Professor of Rheumatology at Imperial College London, is internationally recognised as a leading authority on the role of complement regulation in kidney disease, having made ground-breaking research contributions to both basic and clinical aspects. He is the leading authority on complement-mediated kidney disease. His experimental work on complement regulation has led to paradigm shifts in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the aetiopathogenesis of complement-related kidney diseases. This led him to propose a new kidney disease, called C3 glomerulopathy, and to lead the first international meeting to define diagnostic criteria and standardise treatment. He is a lead author on NICE and NHS England policy statements of C3 glomerulopathy and provides advice to companies developing therapies.
