Professor Sir Louis Appleby CBE FMedSci

Louis Appleby, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Manchester, is a skilled epidemiologist who has brought unprecedented rigour to the study of suicide through innovative case-control designs which have had unprecedented impact, demonstrating reduced suicide rates through targeted interventions. He established Manchester as a leading centre in suicide and self-harm prevention with an emphasis on national studies and the implementation of evidence-based safety measures in mental health and other services.

He has been involved in multicentre collaborative studies of stress and suicidality in NHS junior doctors, and during the Covid-19 pandemic, advised the Government on suicide prevention and had a major role in establishing “real time” surveillance of suicide nationally to monitor figures which could be made rapidly available.
