Prof. John Simpson FMedSci
John Simpson is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Newcastle University. He is a world leader in severe pneumonia, lung injury and trials of immunomodulatory strategies to reverse leukocyte dysfunction. His discoveries led to his current leadership of world-leading, multi-centre clinical trials of immunomodulation in critical illness, and of shorter course antibiotics in sepsis.
His work has changed clinical and research practice. He recently led British Thoracic Society guidance on aspiration pneumonia, and on community-acquired pneumonia in people with learning disability.
His commitment to excellence in clinical science and training is demonstrated by current membership of the MRC Clinical Training and Career Development panel for six years and of the NIHR Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation panel for three.
