Professor Janet Hemingway CBE FRS FMedSci

Janet Hemingway is the Director of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Her work on insecticide resistance in insect vectors of disease has resulted in more accurate methods of monitoring resistance in the field and better practical treatments for vectors of onchocerciasis and malaria. Her strong individual research profile is matched by her commitment to developing both tropical infectious disease research and molecular entomology. In 2001 she was appointed Director of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and has provided the strategic and business planning and leadership for this organisation that has resulted in a major turn-around in its fortunes. Under her direction the School has grown by 70% in the last 3 years and is rapidly re-establishing itself as one of the foremost tropical infectious diseases research institutes worldwide. At the same time she has maintained her active research programme, She chairs a prestigious Keystone meeting committee in her area and is instrumental in running two other major molecular entomology meetings, that between them help to set the international research agenda for applied molecular entomology. She is directly involved in international medical entomology training programmes in Africa and Asia and always has a constant stream of developing country post-graduates in her laboratory. These broad spectrum activities will ensure that she will provide a lasting legacy of improved control of tropical infectious diseases.
