Heather Cordell, Professor of Statistical Genetics at Newcastle University, is one of a rare breed of female mathematicians who has applied her scientific expertise to medical research through the development and application of statistical methodology for the genetic analysis of common, complex disease. Her methodological contributions, with accompanying software implementations, have been used by many groups investigating the genetic basis of common, complex disorders such as type 1 diabetes, eczema, preeclampsia, kidney disease, liver disease, and infectious diseases. She is much in demand as an esteemed lecturer and has taught courses in South Africa, Hong Kong, Iran, Canada, USA, Australia, Italy, France, the Netherlands and the UK.
