Elected Fellow 2019
Gideon Lack is Professor of Paediatric Allergy at King’s College London. His research has revolutionised the field of food allergy and brought about major changes in public health policy. He has challenged conventional wisdom that the avoidance of foods in early infancy will prevent the development of food allergies. He has conclusively demonstrated that hundreds of thousands of new cases of peanut allergy worldwide can be prevented through the early consumption of peanut in infants with eczema. This work has resulted in the transformation of guidelines for 16 national committees and led to new National Institutes of Health guidelines on infant weaning.
