Garth Cooper is Professor in Discovery and Experimental Medicine at the University of Manchester. He is distinguished by his contributions to the molecular pathophysiology and experimental therapeutics of diabetes mellitus. He discovered amylin, the pancreatic islet ß-cell hormone that constitutes islet amyloid in type-2 diabetes. Cooper found that amylin becomes deficient in both major types of diabetes and invented amylin replacement therapy as a new treatment for this disease. This he did by inventing the amylin agonist, ‘pramlintide’. This new medicine, first in the therapeutic class of ‘amylin agonists’, was registered by the USFDA in 2005 for the treatment of both major types of diabetes.
