The investigation and management of disability relating to neurological disorders, particularly multiple sclerosis
Dean of the Faculty of Brain Sciences at University College London, Alan Thompson’s research has been in multiple sclerosis and neuro-rehabilitation. He was one of the first to use MRI to investigate the causes of disability, particularly in primary progressive MS. Interest in the patient experience led him to develop the MS Impact Scale and MS Walking Scale, both now standard in international trials. As Dean of the UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences he secured the Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre and the Alzheimer Research UK Drug Discovery Unit, and his leadership has resulted in UCL Brain Sciences being the most highly cited neurology centre in Europe.
