Steven Williams is Professor of Imaging Sciences at King’s College London. He single-handedly brought brain imaging to the Institute of Psychiatry and the Maudsley Hospital. He has used his skills as a natural scientist to push for new imaging techniques, and has collaborated effectively with clinicians to understand the brain abnormalities using MRI, Fmri, DTI, MRS & EEG. This work has led to better understanding of spinal changes in ALS, had led to differentiation strategies for Parkinsonian syndromes, has developed experimental medicine approaches for pain-drug development, predictive algorigthms for response to antidepressant treatment and has most recently led to a 15-minute scanning protocol to diagnose adult autism. Steve’s current work is focussed on the development of rapidly-deployable clinical tests that would solve the problem of trial-and-error in psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.
