Professor Roger Ordidge FMedSci
Professor Roger Ordidge is Joel Professor of Physics Applied to Medicine, University College London. He is distinguished through his development of techniques in magnetic resonance imaging in vivo, a field in which he has been a pioneer since shortly after the inception of MRI - a development that has had a transformational impact on clinical medicine. In particular he has extended the theory and application of the echo-planar imaging (EPI) methods for rapid imaging and in the process obtained the first undistorted imaging results and the first MRI movie images. He is also the named inventor (with Peter Mansfield) on the original EPI patents. He proposed and developed two of the most important spatial localisation methods; the first, ISIS, was conceived entirely by him and the second, PRESS, was proposed simultaneously and independently of a second group. He has continued to refine this localisation methodology. He demonstrated the first surface coil images and proposed what is now a well established method for correcting gradient coil eddy current artefacts in images. He developed what is now a very widely used motion correction scheme for diffusion-weighted MRI and has continued to develop high speed imaging techniques to measure diffusion and cerebral perfusion. Many of the techniques proposed by him are in common clinical use, and he has been heavily involved in applying MR techniques to the study of the neonatal brain. With a major grant from the Wellcome Trust he established the first 4.7 T whole-body NMR facility in Europe, and this system has produced some of the highest resolution images of the complete brain in the world.
