Causes and consequences of somatic mutations, and their relationship to cancer and ageing.
Peter Campbell is Head of the Cancer, Ageing, and Somatic Mutations Programme at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institution. He has not only furthered our understanding of genetic changes in cancer but has led the development of an entirely new approach to investigating cancer. His work systematically unpicking the relationship between somatic mutations and cancer and his commitment to improving cancer outcomes, has changed our understanding of the development and progression of tumours leading to better patient management. As a member of the International Cancer Genome Consortium steering group, he has been instrumental in coordinating global efforts to understand the genomic changes present in cancers.
