Nicholas Thomson is the Head of Microbes at the Parasites and Microbes programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and Chair of Bacterial Genomics and Evolution at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He leads a scientific group working on the evolution and spread of diarrhoeal and neglected bacterial diseases. His research and capacity building efforts have been conducted across most continents and have influenced national, regional and international public health agencies.
His work has been critical in developing our understanding of pathogen evolution and how they cause disease, and translating his research into actionable information to further influence global disease control.
