Professor Eugenia Piddini FMedSci

Eugenia Piddini, Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Bristol, is a cell and developmental biologist who is internationally well known for her seminal work in the field of cell competition. She demonstrated that cell competition, traditionally studied in embryonic development, also occurs and is important in adult homeostatic tissues. There it acts to potentially slow down the onset of disease and ageing by eliminating damaged cells. By elucidating the mechanisms that cells use to compete, Professor Piddini’s work aims to identify cell competition-based strategies that can be exploited therapeutically to promote stem cell survival in regenerative medicine, or to prevent tumour expansion in cancer.
