Professor Alan Calvert is Professor of Medical Oncology and Director of the Cancer Research Unit at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He is an internationally renowned medical oncologist who has made substantial contributions to the drug treatment of cancer. Professor Calvert was responsible for the early clinical development of the first and only generally available cisplatin analogue, carboplatin which shows similar anti-tumour activity to the parent compound with markedly reduced toxicity. His formula for the individualisation of dosage of carboplatin is used worldwide.
