Shakila Thangaratinam, Professor of Women's Health at the University of Liverpool, is an exceptional clinical academic whose research has had a profound impact on improving the health of women and their babies. Her large multicentre studies provided nationally recommended, innovative tools to predict complications in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia and epilepsy, ensuring appropriate care and avoiding unnecessary interventions. Her work on SARS-CoV-2 risks to pregnancy contributed to WHO guidance prioritising vaccination of pregnant women, averting maternal deaths globally. Her activities in shaping research and training through the academic Board of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists including setting up national clinical research skills training and supporting the Academic’s work, highlight her expertise in influencing policy and practice.
