Munir Pirmohamed is the NHS Chair of Pharmacogenetics and Honorary Consultant Physician at the University of Liverpool. He has an outstanding international profile as a leader in Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics. He developed the Wolfson Centre for Personalised Medicine. His research in drug safety pharmacogenomics has had a major clinical and scientific impact. In patients with abacavir hypersensitivity he showed that genotyping for HLA-B*57:01 genotyping would be cost-effective in preventing these serious reactions. The test was implemented in 2006, and has led, globally, to the virtual disappearance of abacavir hypersensitivity. He continues to innovate using novel trial designs with the aim of furthering the field of stratified medicine.
