Professor Paul Durrington is Professor of Medicine at Manchester University. His most important contribution has been to characterize the antioxidant role of high density lipoprotein. This has led to the hypothesis that paraoxonase, located on HDL, protects against low density lipoprotein oxidation and atherogenesis. In addition Professor Durrington has done much to uncover the pathophysiology of diabetic dyslipidaemia and to draw to the attention of the research and clinical community its significance as a major coronary risk factor in people with diabetes.
